A Playground for Every Rider
The Badlands offer an incredible mix of terrain, perfect for riders of all skill levels. As we wound our way through endless single-track trails, we found ourselves weaving through narrow canyons that seemed almost sculpted for riding. The natural formations create an intricate maze, rewarding those who enjoy technical routes with endless fun.
For thrill-seekers, the area has some exciting hill climbs that are guaranteed to get the blood pumping. The steep ascents test your throttle control and line selection, offering a rewarding challenge for those willing to push their limits. On the flip side, if you’re looking for a more relaxed experience, there are plenty of mellow canyons with a smooth, flowy ride that allows you to enjoy the stunning desert scenery. And, of course, there are those classic straight desert sand sections where you can crack open the throttle in fifth gear and just let it rip.
A Midweek Solitude
Riding here on a Wednesday morning, we were struck by how empty the Badlands were. It felt like we had the entire desert to ourselves, a stark contrast to what we imagine the weekends must be like. The solitude only added to the experience, making every twist and turn feel like a personal discovery. Without the crowds, we could fully immerse ourselves in the landscape, stopping to take in the breathtaking views without another soul in sight.
Extend the Adventure: Font’s Point in Anza Borrego
If you’re riding a plated dual sport, we highly recommend taking a short detour into Anza Borrego State Park to check out Font’s Point. The view from up there is simply incredible—an endless expanse of jagged ridgelines and deep-cut ravines that showcase the raw beauty of the desert. It’s the kind of place that makes you stop and appreciate just how vast and untamed this part of California truly is.
Ride Smart: Desert Conditions & Safety Tips
Desert riding always comes with its own set of challenges, so it’s important to be prepared. Check the weather forecast before heading out, as conditions can vary dramatically. In the winter, temperatures can drop sharply, while in the summer, the heat becomes brutal and unforgiving. No matter the season, always bring plenty of water and essential navigation/communication equipment. The Badlands can be disorienting, and getting lost in the winding canyons is easier than you’d think.
Final Thoughts
Our ride through the northern Badlands of Ocotillo Wells was nothing short of epic. With a mix of technical challenges, high-speed sections, and stunning scenery, it’s a place that deserves a spot on any dual sport rider’s list.
